Where We Stand on Key Topics
Whilst we are particular about not being lobbyists or evangelists, there are some topics for which it is important that we make our position public. Here's how we stand on those items.
Our position on Genetically Modified organisms
The Mulloon Institute is committed to socially responsible and ethical management of natural biological systems. We appreciate and support those advances in developing and adapting plants over many years that have been independently tested and proven to be safe and are free to all.
However, at this time, adopting the Precautionary Principle, we are not satisfied that evidence supports a position that any risks related to the development and use of Genetically Modified Organisms can be safely contained in time and space. Therefore we do not support the use of GMO’s outside the laboratory until such time as;
- evidence is available that confirms they can be contained until proven safe,
- that ethical questions of control by a few without freedom for all users of seed (or genes) is resolved, and
- that all foods containing GM components be clearly labelled, satisfying the right for consumers to make choices about what they eat.
